Workplace Safety Tips

Building Service Contractors employ staff that perform a variety of workplace duties that pose occupational hazards. Whether it is safely mixing chemicals or preventing slips and falls, staff should be provided with the tools and knowledge to ensure on-the-job safety. During National Safety Month, take the time to evaluate and improve your safety program.

5 Tips for Promoting a Safer Workplace

1. Practice Safe Chemical Handling. Be proactive by providing quality training for mixing chemicals. Choose closed-loop Chemical Proportioning Systems and always follow manufacturers' instructions when diluting chemical concentrates. Supply staff with the proper gloves and protective safety goggles. Staff should always mix chemicals in well-ventilated areas to avoid inhaling harmful chemicals.

2. According to OSHA, slips, trips, and falls cause some of the most serious and disabling injuries among building janitors and other workers. Staff should wear the proper footwear while mopping. Rubber soles provide a proper grip on the floor. Prevent slips and falls of building occupants by displaying wet floor signs and cones.

3. Encourage proper lifting techniques. Maintenance tasks that require heavy lifting can cause back, shoulder, and wrist injuries if workers use improper form. Train workers to bend knees while lifting things from the floor. Providing ergonomic support products can reduce injuries that may require time off work.

4. Protect outdoor workers from harmful UVA rays, especially during the warmer months. In a recent study, 71% of outdoor workers say their employers don't provide sunscreen at work, yet 58% of them said they always or sometime see a need to wear sunscreen.1 Protective clothing provides a protective barrier between the sun and skin. Clothing with a closer weave will provide more protection.

5. Conduct regular safety meetings. By reminding staff to practice these safety tips on a periodic basis, you can reduce loss of revenue associated with workplace accidents and protect workers.
